PLANNING MY ROUTE

There are really only a couple of routes to take when heading South.

01

The Coast is a gorgeous way of course.  I tried that route back in the Spring of 2011 and was driven out of there by the cold and rain.  See HERE

Another reason for not taking the Coast route (for me) is that there is NO boondocking available anywhere.  Not one of the Wally’s will allow O/N parking so I would have to pull into a Campground/State Park every night.  That equals $$$$$.

The second choice of routes is the I-5.  Certainly the most direct and popular way to go.  I’ve done it now several times back and forth.  Lots of Rest Stops; Major Gas Stations; Walmarts etc. etc. to pull into.  But the road conditions – once you hit California – are terrible.  Yes, On this major Interstate.  PLUS, The gas prices are much, much higher.  From the research I’ve done the gas prices is CA are on average 30 – 40 cents a gallon higher.

I read on NINA'S BLOG recently that they like to take Highway 395 going South.  I looked at that Route but it appears to be far too desolate for my liking.

Bennie is all groomed now and a handsome little boy he is.  The Groomer said he was excellent to work with and I’m not surprised.

02

He sure was desperate for a hair cut – look at all that hair on the table.  I had to make sure he didn’t see me or I know he’d start to fuss.

03

It’s COLD COLD COLD now and hasn’t stopped raining for days and days.  Gotta keep my little guy warm….

04

Yes, He’s in there somewhere !!

05

On Saturday Tara & Joe were going to an RV Show in Abbotsford and invited me along.  I wasn’t going to go but I’m sure glad I did.  We had a great time looking at all the rigs.

We walked through a LOT of rigs but I gotta say only two really impressed me.  They were the Newmar Dutch Star and the Road Warrior 410 5th Wheel.  The RW we went back to look at a second time because Tara & Joe were very interested in it.  Right now they have a 5th Wheel but it’s not a toy hauler and therefore they cannot take Joe’s gorgeous Harley South with them.  It is one gorgeous 5th Wheel Toy Hauler for sure.  Wonder if they will buy it ???

I was hoping to hold back here until closer to the end of October – the benefit to that is that I would not have to be back in Canada next Spring until the end of April.

That’s not going to happen.  I’m all ready to go NOW but will hold back until somewhere around the middle of October.

I hope the flu shots are available before I leave.  I neglected that last year and ended up getting sick – really sick last Winter.

  1. If you already know you need that flu shot as a result of having been sick last year, then you know what to do. And if you've had the chicken pox, you might look into getting a shot for shingles too, although it's not covered by our Ontario health plan. I didn't care, got the shot anyway.
    Bundle up!

    1. Bob, I had decided that if the flue shots were not in by the time I wanted to leave, then I'd get it when I get to the States. I'd just have to pay for it that way but it would well be worth it.

  2. So, when you leaving? Look for us on your way south. Toni and Doug will be down this way on Sunday and after a bunch of shopping for them we're thinking we'll head to the coast and meander down a ways. Of course, that depends on the weather. Also, we have discovered a few places to hang out along the way. I haven't looked much farther than Lincoln City so far but there is a "free" casino there.

    1. 'Planned' departure date right now is the 15th. But if the weather holds out I might hang back for another week - doubt it though !! LOL Definitely won't be doing the Coast though.

  3. 395 is rather desolate but there are lots of boondocking spots along the way. We just came down 95 through NV which also has lots of places you could boondock. Desolate again but enough small towns along the way that we didn't have trouble getting fuel. Sure, you get all Bennie's fur cut off and then it gets cold.

  5. Our flu shots are available now; I just have to make an appointment to get one before I leave. Packed some more stuff in my rig today and did a dump and fill. Like you, I'm trying to wait so I won't have to come north too early next spring but it is getting harder and harder to wait.

    1. Linda, It sure is getting harder to hold back. But you as an American don't have to do you ??
Don't have to make an appointment here to get the shot - all the Drug Stores even give them.

  6. Sassy,1st time commenter here but i have followed your blog from the beginning. You've had some adventures. I work in a medical Office and we are giving flu shots now. However, if you can wait a bit longer to get it (closer to when you leave) you will have better chance of being covered for the entire flu season. They do wear off and if a new strain is found this year, that won't be included in the earlier shots. Shingles shots are a good idea too, they can be very painful. Safe travels and keep the great blogs coming.

    1. Jean, You are the second commenter to suggest getting a shingles shot also. I've actually had shingles now TWICE in my lifetime and I know how painful they are. I will definitely ask about that next week when I go to get the flu shot.

  7. I know some of the drugstores here and also Wal-Mart sell the shots. They are around $20-$30 I think. I gladly pay that to get the immunization. As soon as I see them in a store where I'm shopping, I'll get one.

By the time you get here, the shutdown should be done, I hope, and the weather will be wonderful.

    1. Terry, That would be in NORTHERN Arizona in the higher elevations. It's still in the low to mid 30's (C) where I'm headed (Yuma).
